A common mistake that industrial facilities make concerning waste oil disposal is assuming that the oil is not contaminated. If they assume that, they proceed with burning the oil, only to release hazardous toxins to the environment. The practice goes against regulations governing waste oil disposal, and authorities take action against such inconsiderate waste oil disposal efforts. However, you can avoid all this trouble by following basic practices of effective and proper waste oil disposal.

Use Original Supplier Containers

Before you decide it is time to dispose of waste oil, you need to accumulate it over time. During this period, proper storage is crucial. Unfortunately, most businesses use substandard containers to store used oil despite the obvious dangers. The reason is that used/waste oil contains contaminants that can react with substandard storage containers and lead to oil leaking into the ground. Therefore, businesses must ensure that they only use the containers the oil was supplied in since the containers are designed to handle hazardous content. If you are looking at vast quantities of waste oil, then your ordinary fuel storage tank will not cut it. Only waste oil tanks will do the trick.

Store Waste Oil Separately

As mentioned earlier, waste oil disposal can take various forms, from recycling to burning the oil. However, the type of disposal procedure to use depends on the contents of the waste oil. If you store waste oil in a manner that allows it to mix with other hazardous waste, then you are looking at a costly, lengthy and stringent disposal procedure. It is because the disposal of contaminated waste oil can only be conducted by a hazardous waste disposal service provider who is registered by the local authorities. Therefore, ensure that you store waste oil far away from all sorts of solvents and chemicals.

Use a Versatile Heater

If waste oil is uncontaminated, businesses are allowed to dispose of it, and one way to do it is by burning the oil in a heater. However, you have to be careful with the type of heater you purchase for this purpose. The reason is that some heaters only burn specific types of waste oil, and this can leave you in limbo if your business deals in different oils. Therefore, it is recommended that when looking for a waste oil heater, you select one that can burn different types of waste oil. You will rest assured that burning waste fuel will not release hazardous toxins to the environment.
